A gamified loyalty program adds game mechanics, such as points, levels, challenges or prizes, to the way customers earn rewards. On Shopify, two approaches get the most attention: the spin-to-win popup and the real game that pays rewards. They look similar from far away. Up close they are built on opposite ideas.
Spin-to-win and scratch-card popups
A shopper lands on your store, a wheel or a card appears, and they spin for a discount code.
Where it works: quick email capture at the door, a clear offer, almost no effort for the shopper.
Where it struggles:
- You fund the prize. Every discount comes out of your margin.
- It happens once. The shopper gets a code and leaves. There is little reason to return.
- The result is chance. That is fine for a promotion, but it makes the reward feel arbitrary.
Real games that pay rewards
Here the shopper plays an actual mobile game and earns points for reaching milestones. Game studios fund the reward, because they pay to find new players.
Where it works:
- Someone else pays. Rewards are not discounts you have to give away.
- It is a habit, not a moment. Every milestone is another reason to come back to your store.
- The reward is earned. The shopper can see the points before they start.
Where it struggles:
- It asks for more effort than a single spin, so it suits shoppers who already like games.
- It needs a phone. On desktop, a QR code opens the same game on mobile.
Side by side

Can you use both?
Yes. A popup is a fine front door for first-time visitors. A rewards page gives your returning shoppers something to do. The two answer different questions: one captures an email, the other earns a visit.
A simple way to decide
Ask three questions. Can you afford to fund every prize? Do your shoppers already play games on their phones? Do you want people back more than once? If the answers are no, yes and yes, a game-funded rewards page is worth a look. See how AppsPrize works for Shopify stores.
